FIRST WORDS
Flip, spell, and sound it out
First-word cards start with a picture: “What word is this?” Flip the card to see the word spelled in big letter tiles, tap each letter to hear its sound, then hear the sounds blend into the word. “Kuh… aa… tuh. Cat!”
Guess first, then flip
Starting with the picture lets your child say the word before seeing it. Then the flip shows how that word is spelled, letter by letter.
Blend the sounds
Sound it out plays each letter sound one at a time and lights up that letter as it is spoken, then says the whole word. Blending is the step from knowing letter sounds to reading words.
Twelve first words
Cat, dog, sun, hat, pig, bed, red, cup, bus, fox, map, and run. Each is three letters with a short vowel sound, the kind of word children read first.
Try it together
- Say each sound slowly, then a little faster, until it becomes the word.
- Point to each letter tile as you say its sound.
- Find the picture word around you: a cup, a hat, something red.
